Visual Rhetoric & Mirror Scares – Trope or Cliche?

I watched “The Ring” for the first time yesterday, (I am not a horror connoisseur by any means) and I caught myself reacting strangely (or in other words, wary) of reflective objects during the film, and understandably, afterwards. I finally realized that my cultural/medial/cinema training had always taught me to fear things you can’t see, (or in the case of a mirror, barely see or see through a filter). This video is a great example of that. Is it a cliché or a trope?
